PRIUM’s Mark Pew Receives IAIABC Gompers Award

President’s award is among organization’s highest honors.

DULUTH, GA – Oct. 18, 2017 – Mark Pew, Senior Vice President of PRIUM, a division of Genex Services, has received one of the highest honors from the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions (IAIABC) — the 2017 Samuel Gompers Award.

As one of six esteemed IAIABC President’s Awards, the Gompers Award is given to an industry leader who has advocated for the improvement of occupational, health, safety, and workers’ compensation on behalf of workers in the spirit of 20th century labor leader, Samuel Gompers.

Pew, known in the industry as the RxProfessor, was recognized for his efforts to manage the overutilization of prescription drugs and educating stakeholders about the need to focus on the injured worker. He was also honored for serving as a major player in advocating for the workers’ compensation community to reduce the inappropriate use of opioids and develop strategies to help injured workers who have dependence and addiction disorders.

Pew has been credited with spearheading the IAIABC’s efforts to develop a database of federal and state efforts to combat the opioid epidemic. His consistent social media mantra to #CleanUpTheMess is representative of Samuel Gompers’ efforts to recognize the human cost of the epidemic, said Lisa Wichterman, IAIABC Medical Issues Committee chairperson.

"Mark Pew is committed to ending the opioid crisis,” said Wichterman. “Mark is a passionate speaker, blogger and tweeter, willing to educate on the harmful effects of opioids and challenge people to think differently about alternative treatments to alleviate pain. His message is to treat injured workers with respect; injured workers are people, too.”

“Mark is an incredible asset to the IAIABC Medical Issues Committee,” she added. “He has taken the lead on the ‘Opioid Solution’ paper which is a collection of the efforts of the Jurisdictions and the Federal Government to fight the opioid crisis.”

IAIABC announced its President’s Award winners Oct. 4 during a luncheon celebration at the IAIABC 103rd Convention, Portland, OR.
